Editorial Reviews:

The author team of Julia Bradley and Anita Millspaugh remain the guiding light in programming with Visual Basic .NET for countless students around the world. How better to master the most popular programming language than to use the bestselling textbook? To be at the cutting edge of technology start with specific Learning Objectives in themed Case Studies and move on to practice with Programming Skills, Exercises, and Examples. Combine screen captures, step-by-step exercises, and thorough appendices and you can ensure that Programming Excellence Begins Here. This textbook is intended for use in an introductory programming course, which assumes no prior knowledge of computer programming. The later chapters are also appropriate for professional programmers who are learning a new language to upgrade their skills.

Summary: A decent beginner's book on VB.Net Programming
Comment: As a professional C# developer but also a Computer Science student, I was required to take a course in VB.Net development from Baker College and this is the text we used. First let me say that I am not a fan of Visual Basic anyway. I find it to be too verbose and yes it leaves the door open for too many poor coding practices. These are opinions you can read on any "language wars" message board and I'm sure there are some arguments against these opinions, nevertheless they are mine. I cannot say with 100% certainty that my dislike for Visual Basic did not color my opinion of this book. The positives would be that the book is easily laid out with clear examples. It is not a bad book really for someone who is getting their first exposure to Visual Basic or programming in general. However I do have a few issues. First the book is not very "real world" friendly - the examples are those you would expect in a class room rather than what you might find in the real world. That's probably a somewhat moot complaint since this book is intended for a classroom. Secondly, the book encourages some less than ideal coding practices that would seem to be carry overs from VB6 such as the use of inefficient functions such as CType and CInt for type conversions. Finally, too me this book focuses too much on Visual Basic and not enough on the .Net Framework. The real power of Visual Basic (or C# for that matter) is not the language itself but the Framework it is built upon, and this book only brushes on some of the great features that a VB.Net programmer has available to them. If you are someone who is trying to do some independently paced self learning on VB.Net, first I would recommend that you learn C# instead :-). Then, if you are still determined to learn Visual Basic, I would recommend that you find a better book than this one. While this one isn't terrible, I know there are some better books out there.

Summary: Visual Basic.Net 203 Update Edition
Comment: The book appears grea--typical of Brqdley/Millspaugh. However, it would have been nice if the endclosed software matched the text of the book. The book refers to the "2003 Update", but the endclosed sofware is for the "2005 update". The two do not match and thus the purpose of enclosing the software so I can do the exercises in the book and thus
learn to use the software is very much more difficult than intended. With the missmatch, I now believe I wasted the purchase price. I did not get what I bargained for.

Summary: A very cursory approach to learning VB.NET
Comment: This book, while getting a user quickly up and running with VB.NET, provides very little detail and explanation on almost every topic it covers. If you are someone who has never written a line of code in your life, have never used Visual Studio (or any other IDE for that matter), and want a very cursory explanation of VB.NET and the use of the various code wizards, then you will find this book quick and informative. For those of us who demand a more rigorous approach, I would highly recommend purchasing another book, geared toward more serious programmers.

Summary: straightforward programming within Visual Studio
Comment: The programming in VB.NET 2005 is straightforwardly presented here. It is not a comprehensive exposition of all the VB.NET commands and widgets. Otherwise the book would be much thicker. Instead, the authors strove to teach the most common and, hopefully, useful features of the language.

We can see that Microsoft has put a lot of effort into making VB coding as painless as possible. Buttressed by the addition of a CD with Visual Studio. The latter gives a nice development environment that you could consider learning. Alas, there is only a 6 month trial period for it. Clearly, Microsoft puts this forth as a teaser. Hoping that by the end of that time, you'll be so used to Visual Studio that you'll gladly plonk down bucks for the full version.
